Hello and welcome to the listing for my pretty awesome VW Notchback.
Where do I even start? I'm a over honest kind of guy so please read the full description and I'll say it exactly as it is.
I purchased this vehicle September last year after deeply regretting selling my slammed 65 bug. The story goes this vehicle was imported from South Africa by a Scottish dealer and purchased by a "friend" in the VW scene last summer who had it UK registered and he put it up for sale due to selling his house.
I purchased the vehicle on trust of a word without seeing it and was told the only thing it needed was the "carbs being set up" and I had it transported down.... Well lets just say over £10,000 later in restoration we are at this point (Parts & Labour)
I have all the invoices for the vehicle and I haven't skimped out on parts... Quality ones and NOS bits have gone into this car and a few things to mention are
The invoices are extensive and can be viewed / come with the car.
- Full engine rebuild (1600cc)
- Twin 34 ICT Weber carb set up (over £800 on its own)
- EvaResto 4 inch front beam (£1200)
- All new lines / hoses / ball joints / bushes / cables
- Complete new brake set up all around
- New steering box
- All new door seals, window seals etc
- Gearbox work
- New mounts
- New Tyres / Wheel refurbishment
- New handbrake set up
- Lots of new tinware
- New shocks
- New distributor / rotor etc
This is just me mentioning some points on the vehicle and the work its had done.
The car has been painted at some point in the past but its definitely passable and looks good (with some marks / wear) and a small possible filler crack on the rear trunk lid.
The interior is in great condition, seats retrimmed at some point and comfy / well done.
With the vehicle spending almost all of its life in South Africa it hasn't rusted out like most UK cars and its very solid. Potentially one minor patch near the battery on the pan.
Like every car, especially a classic there are some negatives and I would prefer to be over honest.
- The tracking needs setting up
- Brakes need bedding in and re adjustment (I believe the rear right is over tightened and cause it to stick slightly on) but this could also potentially be a wheel bearing.
- Generator light sometimes flickers on.
- Indicator stalk has snapped and will need replacing, however it still works and operates.
- The front grill is a South African special, potentially from a early Jetta. This personally doesn't bother me as its part of the cars story but something that could be addressed if you wished.
- The Speedo doesn't seem to work.
- Passenger door handle can be temperamental from the outside, but fine inside.
- Due to this vehicle coming straight from the garage and not being driven a fair distance somethings may need adjusting after a run in period.
I would say honestly this car is over 90% done with a few issues still to be addressed but I'm at the point of pure frustration with it due to how miss-sold it was to me and the money it has taken to get it to this point. I also badly wrote off my daily driver in the bad weather last week, so sadly I need to release the funds as a everyday car is more important.
The previous UK owner also let the DVLA register this vehicle as a 1972, but its not its a 1964 (I have no idea why he let this happen) but this is an easy fix!! The Vin is correct on the vehicle, so you will just need to get a VW Birth Certificate (costs around £100) or a cover letter from a VW owners club and then you can request the DVLA to come out and re-register it to a correct 64 plate.
This also wasn't told to me when buying as I seen pics of it on the South African reg which comes with the car.
I drove the Notch home from the garage but I would suggest its trailered away due to that rear bearing or brake needing adjusting as it felt like the car was holding back / smoking slightly on the rear right wheel.
I'm into this vehicle for over £22,000 (I know right) so you can understand my frustration and it doesn't matter how epic this car is, I'm at that point where I need to draw a line, cut my losses and move it on! Especially after writing my daily driver off.
Like all old Volkswagens it likes to drop one or two minor dots of oil.
It also comes with the South African safety triangle and the genuine VW Wheel Hubs.
I feel like I've been over honest with this vehicle as the experiences / what I've felt over the last four / five months has been one of the most unpleasant I've experienced.
I believe £12,495 is a very fair price after reaching out to a few VW dealers / friends who said they would retail it as is for around £14,000 - £15,000 but I'm factoring in it still needs some work to make it perfect and also transportation you will need to pay to take it from Bridgend South Wales.
Come check the car out, I'll put the kettle on and we can take it for a local spin.
One thing i ask is PLEASE NO time wasters or tyre kickers!
I'm selling this vehicle due to releasing funds but please I'm NOT interested in any silly offers, this is a cheap car as it is for a Notch but I will listen to sensible ones.
You are welcome to drop me a text at any point, but phone calls in sensible hours please.
Collection from Bridgend, South Wales and as above it will need to be trailered away.
Logbook V5 in my name.
No warranty is given with this vehicle and It's being sold as seen / as a unfinished project.
Thanks for taking the time to read the listing and this will be a pretty awesome car for someone that is totally fresh to the UK VW scene and ready for you to finish and put your stamp on.
Stay cool ????????
