This lot will be auctioned via Historics Classic and Sportscar Auctioneers, The Ascot Racecourse sale on Saturday the 2nd of March, High St, Ascot SL5 7JX. The original Elan 1500 was introduced in 1962 as a roadster and made its first appearance at the Earls Court Motor Show, London. After a very short production run of just 22 cars the engine was enlarged and the car was renamed as the Elan 1600. An optional hardtop was offered in 1963 and a coupe version in 1965. The two-seat Lotus Elan replaced the elegant but unreliable and expensive to produce Lotus Elite. The Elan was technologically advanced with a DOHC 1557cc engine, four-wheel disc brakes, rack and pinion steering, and four-wheel independent suspension. Gordon Murray, designer of the McLaren F1 supercar, reportedly said that his only disappointment with the McLaren F1 was that he couldnt give it the perfect steering of the Lotus Elan.Finished in Cirrus White with black hood, trim and wheels, this fabulous Elan Sprint has provenance of which we rarely see from a manufacturer. First registered in November 1972 and in 1980 the car was sent to Lotus service dealer Northern Sportscars where it was upgraded to a five-speed gearbox, nothing too unusual there, however, with details supplied to Lotus cars the Technical Services Manager D.J.T Waring wrote to the DVLC on behalf of the owner to declare that the car can now be designated as an Elan Sprint 5 which they duly did and Lotus even changed the original owners handbook, this is all detailed in a letter from Lotus Cars Limited on the 28th March 1980. The car since has been maintained continually and is presented with original owners handbook, stunning history file with comprehensive details of maintenance and ownership dating back to the mid 70s. It runs beautifully and in 2018 had a rebuilt 3.77 differential after what was clearly a full engine recommissioning in 2016. A conversion to Elantrikbits CV drive shafts was also completed recently although original donut drive shafts will accompany the car. Boasting a new hood and the wood dash has been restored thus the cabin is a lovely place to sit before the turn of a key and the fun really starts. Elan Sprints are incredible to drive and this is truly a unique opportunity to own a Sprint 5 with such provenance at a sensible guide price. Consignor Mathew Priddy
