Driver Support Services are recruiting for a transport manager who will also carry out driving duties for our client in Hertford.
In this dual role, you will be responsible for overseeing the efficient operation of our transport department while also carrying out lorry driving duties. The ideal candidate should possess strong leadership skills, excellent driving abilities, and the ability to manage a team effectively. Must have a can do, pro-active attitude.
Working Hours - 45 - 56 Hours Per Week Mon - Friday & Weekends
Role would be split into 1 day compliance & admin/ 1.5days planning/ 2.5 days driving
Responsibilities:
* Transport Management:
* Develop and implement transportation strategies, policies, and procedures to ensure smooth operations and achieve organizational objectives. Plan and coordinate the daily schedules of drivers and vehicles to optimize efficiency and meet delivery deadlines.
* Monitor the performance of drivers, their hours and enforce adherence to company policies, safety regulations, legal requirements and infringements. Liaise with HR to carry out any staff disciplinary actions.
* Creating haulage invoices for the transport administrator and Manage completion of hauler audits.
* Collaborate with other departments to streamline processes, improve customer service, and resolve any transportation-related issues.
* Maintain and develop a positive Health & Safety culture throughout site. Co-ordinate emergency repairs of lorries.
* Inducting new drivers / training plans.
* Maintain O licence and driver record documentation.
* Planner:
* Maintaining relationships with regular and new customers. Manage and maintain accurate records of transportation activities, including trip logs, vehicle maintenance, and fuel consumption, delivery notes, PODs.
* Sourcing new customers. Sourcing profitable work.
* Planning the most efficient route for drivers, keeping empty miles to a minimum. Liaise with on-site fitter regarding lorry 6 weeklies and repairs.
* Ensuring adequate staff to cover annual leave.
* Creating haulage quotations for new and existing customers.
* Organise third - party haulage when required.
* Lorry Driving:
* Operate company-owned lorries to transport goods and materials to designated locations safely and efficiently.
* Follow assigned routes and schedules, ensuring timely deliveries while maintaining a high level of professionalism and customer service.
* Load and unload cargo, ensuring proper handling and securing of items to prevent damage or accidents.
* Conduct routine vehicle inspections and perform basic maintenance tasks, such as checking tire pressure, fluid levels, and reporting any mechanical issues promptly.
* Adhere to all traffic laws, safety regulations, and company policies while driving and operating the lorry.
Requirements:
* Class 1 Licence, Telehandler/ forklift ticket
* CPC Transport Manager preferable. Valid commercial driver's license (CDL) with a clean driving record.
* Transport planning/management and lorry driving experience
* Excel proficiency.
* Strong knowledge of transportation laws, regulations, and safety standards.
* Excellent organizational and time-management skills to prioritize tasks effectively. Strong leadership and communication abilities to effectively manage a team.
* Ability to solve problems efficiently and make sound decisions under pressure.
* Good physical stamina and the ability to lift and move heavy objects and experience in Agriculture.
* Flexibility to work varied shifts, including nights, weekends, and holidays as required.
Salary £45,000 - £50,000 depending on experience.
