Our mission statement is Helping people follow Jesus. To that end we are looking for a gifted relational Bible teacher with strong pastoral and leadership skills, and with a proven track record in youth work. Introduction We are a church of evangelical Christians meeting in Crofton, an area with a population of about 15,000 people, between Orpington and Petts Wood in South East London. Our church family consists of people of all ages from a wide variety of backgrounds around the world. We continue to experience growth in numbers, made up of individuals and young families attending church services. We now need to appoint an Associate Pastor, to strengthen our staff team (currently three in number), and to oversee and further develop a vibrant Youth Work, so we can be a more effective missional family, helping people of Orpington and far beyond to know and follow Jesus Christ. Our mission statement is Helping people follow Jesus. To that end we are looking for a gifted relational Bible teacher with strong pastoral and leadership skills, and with a proven track record in youth work. This person will work directly with our Senior Pastor, our staff team and our youth leaders, as well as helping to share in ministry across the whole church family.
Specifically, the holder of this role will have an evangelistic heart for relationship-building, work with young people, discipleship and Bible teaching. A new challenge The decision to recruit to this post was made prior to the current pandemic.
We are aware that the shape of CBC will be different post lockdown than we envisaged at the time of our original decision.
Nevertheless as a church we are committed to embracing the new normal and accept that there will be new and unexpected challenges.
We also believe that this time could be a fertile one for helping people follow Jesus.
So we are expecting any new Associate Pastor to come with us on this journey; to be open to what God is saying to us about priorities and new ways of doing church; to be flexible and versatile around tasks and roles and to be excited at what God has in store for His people. Job Description General Ministry and Leadership Play a full role in the overall leadership and the life of the church. This will include attending and at times leading staff meetings, church meetings, prayer meetings and leadership team meetings. Provide overall direction and vision for our existing Youth Work at CBC Be involved in the preaching and teaching ministry, equipping others to share their faith, including organising and leading short courses and outreach activities as appropriate. Be a member of the Eldership Team Be involved in the development of wider strategies. Be involved in all aspects of pastoral care. Be responsible for strategy and direction in relation to the churchs digital and technology function and output Be involved in leading formal and informal services. This may include leading communion, taking weddings, funerals and baptisms and leading worship in other group contexts. Model in word and action a lifestyle commensurate with the teaching of the Bible and in line with the vision and values of CBC. Carry out such other work as may be reasonably required by the Senior Minister Specific Ministry responsibilities Youth Work Approximately half of the working time will be allocated for the purpose of youth work including co-ordinating and overseeing the work amongst our teenagers Lead our Youth ministry team and to ensure that youth work is represented at leadership Team level. Assist our existing youth leaders in teaching and applying the Bible in relevant and contemporary ways. Partner with parents in the discipleship of the next generation, ensuring that parents are informed of the termly program. Focus on developing relationships with our young people and, with the Youth Team, help to create a social network within the church, enabling our teenagers to take ownership of their own groups and their own walk with God, and equipping them to share their faith with others. Explore ways of building cross-generational relationships into our existing programs and activities With the existing youth leaders, provide appropriate pastoral care for our teenagers Co-ordinate the teaching program for the young people in Intrepid (ages 11 to 14) and Next Gen (ages 14 to 18) Work with the youth team to provide good transitional experiences for our young people as they move through the various age groups Begin to create a culture where our young people feel included and that they belong to the church family and provide ways in which our young people can develop meaningful roles in church life. Foster, build and join in with the existing youth work in our local area Work with the youth team to create annual opportunities for our young people to attend the bigger events such as Capernwray other appropriate camps Develop supportive pastoral links with our students Specific Ministry responsibilities Across the Church While working across the whole church, be responsible for leading a strategic review and reinvigoration of discipleship and evangelism, especially through small groups and for ensuring that discipleship is a key ministry Ensure that such groups are planned, staffed and led well with relevant high-quality material; that there is a plan for growing new groups and leaders; that leaders are prayerfully and thoughtfully chosen, trained and supported. Accountability, Support and Training Accountable to the Senior Minister and through him to the Leadership Team; Participate in regular supervisory meetings and an annual appraisal process with the Senior Minster and the Leadership Team as appropriate. Committed to their own physical, emotional, mental and spiritual wellbeing Committed to on-going relevant formal and informal training as agreed with the Senior Minister Establish and maintain an appropriate personal support ministry structure (such as confidential prayer partner or group/external mentor) Person Specification The Associate Pastor will be central to the vision of the church in helping people to become fully committed and equipped followers of Jesus Christ. This is a forward-looking, dynamic position for which formal theological training (or similar) is desirable.
At least 3 years previous leadership experience of church ministry, a proven experience in Youth Work, and the ability to work on ones own initiative are essential. Essential Person Requirements Clear personal faith in Jesus Christ as Saviour and Lord with a desire to serve God through the local church.
They will accept the authority of the Bible in all matters of life and doctrine and be in agreement with the churchs basis of faith. Mature faith and committed to their own personal relationship with God along with a good knowledge of the Bible and Christian truth.
Integrity in seeking to apply the teaching of the Bible in their personal life. Commitment to prayer both personally and with others. Share the vision and values of CBC.
They will be sympathetic to the basic tenets of Baptist theology and practice and be willing to work within that framework. Enthusiasm for the Gospel and a passion for seeing people come to faith and grow in their relationship with God.
They will have a heart for discipling people and will have demonstrated that in their previous ministry. Display and model strong Bible handling skills and possess excitement and skill in explaining the Bible in a modern and accessible way in a variety of contexts. Ability to lead and develop youth activities both on Sunday and midweek in liaison with our youth leaders, ensuring that there are termly opportunities for young people to commit their lives to Jesus Christ. Able to come alongside, nurture and support and encourage a wide variety of people of different ages, backgrounds, cultures and needs. Able to work on their own initiative, as part of a wider team and in a supervised relationship with evidence of strong team leading and building skills. Reliable, hard-working, flexible, able to maintain confidentiality and able to respond to a crisis in a calm and thoughtful way. Understand all relevant principles of safeguarding in regard to working with young people and vulnerable adults. Possess at least three years recent leadership experience in similar Christian ministry and with a proven and successful record in youth work. Remuneration and General Information This is envisaged as a full-time role.
Working occasional Saturdays and regularly on Sundays and in evenings will be required. At least one day off a week will be given, usually on the same day each week. Holiday entitlement is 5 weeks per year plus all public holidays, although some of these will need to be worked with time off given in lieu. The nature of the role means that there is a Genuine Occupational Requirement that the Associate Pastor must be an evangelical Christian in agreement with the constitution, ethos, values and vision of Crofton Baptist Church.
Additionally, the Associate Pastor must agree with and be able to sign the Evangelical Alliance Basis of Faith. The Associate Pastor will report directly to the Senior Pastor and through him to the Leadership Team. Any offer of this post is conditional upon the church receiving a satisfactory Enhanced DBS check and the post-holder having the legal right to live and work permanently in the UK Employment is also subject to satisfactory references and the satisfactory completion of a six-month probationary period. A full driving license plus access to private transport is desirable agreed expenses will be paid. The Associate Pastor will be expected to live no further than three miles from CBC. Salary Between £32,000 and £35,000 per annum and will depend on experience and qualifications.
The church does not provide accommodation for this post, but the church will pay a further £6000 (non pensionable) per annum housing allowance. The church will make a contribution of 5% to the Associate Pastors pension
