About this client/child: Sami is 11 years old. He has an incredible mum and dad, a little brother, and two older sisters. He is truly at the heart of his family! I was fortunate to meet Sami (albeit via a video call) when he was watching one of his many favourite sensory TV shows beautiful birds were making him smile. I also had the pleasure of being introduced to his special Monkey toy! Sami will give a very loud laugh when Monkey interacts with him, but an even bigger laugh is shared when his little brother, aged 4, gets into trouble! When Sami feels uncomfortable, he will show it through facial expressions and noises. Sensory input is very important for Sami; he loves it when you tap him on his hands, make funny whistling noises, or whisper in his ear. His parents have also introduced different smells to different parts of the house using essential oils; they provide comfort and a feeling of safety for him. Sami has Cerebral Palsy, affecting all four limbs, and developmental delay he is PEG fed, requires suctioning and he has a visual impairment. He has Atopic Eczema which can lead to a lot of discomfort. More info given when you apply for this role.
Overview of role: This is a 2 -1 role. You will support one another in hoisting Sami from his bed, (from his bed to his chair/standing frame/onto a wedge on the floor/into his Turtle seat). Due to his Eczema, you will diligently give Sami his bed bath, then apply his cream and gently get him dressed and ready for the day. Four days a week (apart from Thursday) he has a teacher who comes in for one hour. During this time one support worker will sit with Sami during his lesson while the other support worker carries out light household duties related to Sami. He has a structured therapy team in place (five days a week). Hours of work: 09.00 am to 12 noon Monday to Friday.
Who this job would suit: *Female Support Workers who are genuinely compassionate about working with families as a whole! Sami and his family are very open-minded and gregarious. You will bounce into this role with vigor and a fabulous sense of humour. You will be working alongside a colleague, so it is vital that you also come into this role with an understanding of teamwork. This is an ideal role for an SEN support worker, Teaching Assistant, or Carer searching for a part-time morning role. Mum and Dad are very hands-on so there will be lots of great ongoing support if/when required.
Whats great about this job: Samis family! They are so welcoming to staff, plus excellent ongoing supervision from the familys case manager and senior overnight nurse, and training from the therapy team. Sami will be an absolute joy for anyone lucky enough to join team Sami. A rewarding morning role.
