Role Purpose
Natural Resources Wales are providing a Higher Education Placement opportunity for a marine biology/science graduate to spend 15 months within the Marine Environmental Assessment & Reporting Team in Bangor, North Wales. We invite applications from highly motivated individuals who graduated within the last 12 months with a relevant BSc/MSc degree.
The placement will be involved in a broad selection of surveys and office activities and will receive full training whilst on the placement. They will contribute and gain experience in all areas of work the marine monitoring team are involved in, depending on qualifications, aptitude, experience and priorities at the time.
Typically they will:
Develop field skills and experience by assisting and participating in intertidal and subtidal field surveys including: SCUBA diving monitoring and survey, drop down video and remote camera work, side scan sonar surveys, cetacean surveys and seal surveys, infaunal grab sampling, non-native species surveys, general boat work and aiding in the smooth running of surveys whilst underway.
Learn planning and logistics skills by contributing to the preparation for field work, demobilisation, general equipment servicing and maintenance, organising annual services, upkeep of NRW's boat Pedryn.
Develop laboratory skills whilst handling and preserving marine samples in the laboratory.
Learn data handling and management skills whilst developing and updating the monitoring digital image and video archive.
Receive training and learn how to use corporate databases such as Marine Recorder, which hold our marine data.
Improve authorship skills whilst assisting with writing and report production as required.
Gain experience of public speaking through presentation of work experience at workshops/group meetings as appropriate.
Take reasonable care for the health and safety of themselves and others and to comply with all health and safety legislation as appropriate
Qualifications and Skills
Excellent organisation skills, written and verbal communication skills.
Technical competence in maintenance of marine monitoring equipment.
Hold a current full UK valid licence to drive NRW fleet vehicles (cars and vans).
Reasonable physical fitness - frequent requirement to work long hours in physically demanding roles e.g. on boat/ supporting diving work/ survey work.
Ability to work well in a team.
Good ICT capability, including data handling and basic understanding of statistics and ability to create charts and plots in Microsoft Excel.
